Recently I have noticed some staining spots on my teeth and they have been driving me crazy. I know that drinking red wine and coffee does not help, but they are vices I am not willing to give up!
I first had my teeth whitened 11 years ago for my wedding. It was extremely painful and I had a lot of tooth sensitivity afterwards. After that experience, I swore I would never do it again. Over the years I have tried several over the counter teeth whitening products including Crest White Strips. I would only be able to do them for a couple of days before the pain and sensitivity started. Fast forward to the present and I am now able to get my teeth whitened with minimal discomfort. I am so happy with the results that I wanted to share my experience with you.
When I first moved to Long Island, I found a dentist that I was very happy with. Over the years, my schedule changed and the hours the office was opened did not work any longer for me. I visited a new dentist who told me on my first visit that I had 4 cavities! I could not believe it! I had no pain and had been going to the dentist twice a year for my entire life. My sitter suggested that I visit her dentist, Dr Surks, who gave me a second opinion. Dr Surks confirmed my suspicions and noticed 1 slight cavity. From that moment on, I knew I had found a dentist I could trust.
I spoke to Dr Surks about wanting to get my teeth whitened and told her my concerns about the pain I had experienced 11 years ago. She suggested that we do an in office Zoom procedure that would be done by one of her technicians. In addition, she recommended I use Sensodyne toothpaste several weeks prior to help with the sensitivity. I was glad she said that because I’ve actually been using Sensodyne for over a year now. If you don’t want to use Sensodyne, there is also a prescription fluoride toothpaste that she recommends.
The Zoom procedure lasted 1 hour. I did notice a little sensitivity on the bottom teeth half-way through, but it went away by the time the procedure was done. Immediately after I noticed the results and was quite happy with how white my teeth had gotten. I had no pain at first but then probably 10 minutes later I did get some “zingers”. “Zingers” are when all of a sudden you get a sharp pain to your tooth. They are not enjoyable but thankfully go away quickly. I experienced about 5-6 “zingers” within the next hour and then they stopped. My teeth were definitely sensitive the rest of the day but it was not overly painful. I did take some Advil to help minimize the discomfort. The next day, no pain or sensitivity and beautiful white teeth!
Sometimes with beauty treatments there is a little pain before the silver lining. If you are willing to deal with a little discomfort for 24 hours, teeth whitening is a wonderful quick procedure. Teeth whitening is not covered by insurance and it can be a little pricey. Dr Surks is giving LI Fashionable Foodie readers 10% off this procedure.
