My Skincare Regimen

I first started to play around with skincare products when I was in my 20’s. I didn’t really know what I was doing but figured moisturizer was a good place to start. I had heard about toner and would do that every now and again but honestly half the time I would get lazy and forget. I figured my skin looked good and I was still young, so why stress it!

In my 30’s, I started to dabble with eye cream. I could see those crow’s feet coming and wanted to try to fend them off for as long as possible. I tried every eye cream under the sun – super expensive ones like La Mer, to more affordable options like Belif. My under eyes were incredibly dry which enhanced the crow’s feet, and it seemed that no matter what brand I used, I wasn’t really noticing a difference.

Fast forward to last year when I met an amazing woman at Sephora who took the time to teach me and help me create an entire skin care regimen. I had heard all about serums and oils but never knew what to use, when to use it, and what order to use it in! It can be a bit overwhelming!

After meeting with her, my knowledge grew exponentially, and I now understood why I needed to use certain products and in what order. We started off with a basic regimen, but I have modified it and made some changes since that day.

This post is going to take you through all the products I use daily. It is quite a bit, but I am in my final year of my 30’s and I can tell you that my skin has never looked better! Remember that you may need to tweak some of these products to fit your skin type, but I hope this post can help provide a little insight into the overwhelming world of skincare products!

First things first – if you are not cleansing your skin properly, the rest of your regimen means nothing! You need to start with a clean base and that means getting rid of all that make-up and dirt that has accumulated on your face after a long day.

I used to just wash my face with Cetaphil and consider it clean. Now I do something called a double cleanse. I learned about the double cleanse from a friend of mine who has been studying proper skincare maintenance for many years.

The double cleanse is exactly what is sounds like – cleansing twice! I start my cleanse with the Goop Luminous Melting Cleanser. I apply the Cleanser directly to my face and then I wipe it off with a wet Muslin Cloth. The cloth enables you to get a deeper clean and you will be shocked at what the cloth looks like when you are done! After I get the Melting Cleanser off, I apply Elemis Biotec Skin Energizing Cleanser to my face. Again, I wet the muslin cloth and wipe the cleanser off my face. When I am done washing, I like to use a white towel to make sure my face is completely clean. Note - I only do the double cleanse at night for a deep cleaning. In the morning I just use the Elemis Cleanser.

Now to the fun part - serums, eye creams and oils – oh my! The most important thing to note when you are applying your products is to go from lightest to heaviest. You want to build your product, so if you start with the heaviest, the lighter products can’t do their job.

The first product I start with and only use at night is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50. I have read many reviews about this product and it is a cult favorite. People are beyond obsessed with it, so of course I had to give it a try! Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 exfoliates and hydrates, which makes it a good way to prep your skin before you apply the rest of your products. I find that this product causes a slight stinging, so I only use it when I feel like I need a deep cleaning.

After I apply the P50, I rinse it off with a splash of Caudalie Vinoperfect Glycolic Brightening Essence. If I don’t use P50 that night, I go straight to this product after cleansing. The Essence cleans away dead skin cells while hydrating your skin.

Once the Essence is on, I apply my serum. I currently have 4 serums in rotation, as they each have different purposes. But before I go into detail about which ones I use and why, let’s discuss what a serum is!

Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serum is particularly suited to this task because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles. – Into The Gloss

Ok, now do you see why I’m heavily invested in serums! No wrinkles please!

Some days I use all of the serums, and some days I use just 1 or 2. It all depends on how my skin feels and what I think it needs for that day.

My nighttime serums are Dr Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Brighten & Firm Vitamin C Serum and SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intesifier.

I started using the Dr Dennis serum because of its two main ingredients – Collagen and Vitamin C. As we age, we lose our collagen which is what keeps our skin looking young and vibrant. Using a collagen product is thought to tighten skin and erase fine lines and wrinkles. This is the reason you see so many collagen health and beauty products. Vitamin C we all know is key to brightening our skin, so the combination of both sold me on this product.

Hyaluronic Acid keeps skin plump, hydrated and, most importantly, young-looking! We are born with a high level of Hyaluronic Acid , but unfortunately the amount of Hyaluronic Acid in skin diminishes with age, most significantly after age 40. After doing a bit of research, I found that the Skinseuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intesifier had the best reviews and I have been happy with the results thus far!

The daytime serums I use are First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum, Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum and the Hyaluronic Acid. I initially purchased the First Aid Beauty Serum with the woman at Sephora and I wound up really liking it. It is lightweight which is why I prefer it for the daytime. The Drunk Elephant Serum is a little more hydrating but it still feels quite light and leaves no greasy feeling which is perfect for during the day.

After the serums, it’s time for the eye cream. We all know how important eye cream is and there are so many options available! I have found 2 that I like and just tend to rotate between them. My current favorites are Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream and Drunk Elephant C Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream. Both eye creams specialize in hydrating and brightening under eye circles which is a big issue of mine. If you share the same issue, these products could be great for you as well. I would recommend talking to someone at Sephora or Ulta to pick the right eye cream for your needs. I have tried many brands and these are the first ones that I am actually noticing a difference with. It could be because of my entire change in routine, or just that these are really effective eye creams!

Finally, last but least is the closer of the skincare regimen – the facial oil! When I first heard about facial oil, I thought the idea was ridiculous! Our whole life we want to keep our face oil-free so we don’t break out with pimples and now we are going to willingly put oil on our face! YES!!

I only apply the oil at night but it makes a huge difference in the morning. No moisturizer can do the work that an oil can. The oil gets in deep to create soft, dewy, glowing skin. My favorite facial oil is Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil. This oil feels heavy going on, but it works its way into the skin quickly, so you don’t feel super greasy when you go to bed. I usually put it on an hour before I am going to lie down for the night so that all the oil has settled and doesn’t wind up all over my pillow!

My final step in this long process is a product I just found out about a couple of months ago. Every 3-4 days, I add a couple of drops of Tan Luxe Illuminating Self Tan Drops to my final serum in the morning and it gives my skin a nice healthy glow. I love that this product doesn’t have a nasty self-tanner smell to it and it is relatively fool proof! It doesn’t leave any streaks and gives you a nice gradually tan look.

So that’s it! My entire skin care regimen! I know it is pretty intense, but trust me, once you get started down the rabbit hole, you will be racking up as many products as me!
