The Rust & Gold - Huntington, NY

The Rust & Gold - Huntington, NY

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I were in Huntington Village heading home after a night out when we saw a place that seemed to just be getting the night started. Curious to see what could be so lively at this time of night, we drove over to get a closer look. There were tons of people outside and we realized that “this must be the place.” The place we discovered is The Rust & Gold.

The Rust & Gold opened in 2016 with the concept of taking a traditional sports bar and adding a fun, modern twist. This vision comes from owners Frank Antonetti, Jay Janawsky, and Ryan Sipp, all of whom have spent many years in the restaurant business. They’ve accomplished their goal by creating a beautiful space covered with TVs broadcasting the latest sporting event,  a wonderful menu with the most delicious “bar” food, and fun games to play while you wait for your food.

When we first walked up to The Rust & Gold, I loved the open appearance of the restaurant. There is a nice outside seating area and the inside area has no windows or doors, so even when you were inside, you had the outside feel as well. Throughout the restaurant people are playing games like jumbo jenga, foosball, and even chess to name a few. When I went to use the restroom, I saw a cool photo booth and next to it was a bulletin board where people hung up their photos. I especially loved this touch because it gave the restaurant a homey type of feel.

There are so many good options on the menu that my friends and I decided to order a number of dishes so we could sample a variety. We started off the meal with the classic Crispy Mozzarella Triangles. I’ve had this dish a million times but I think this version was one of my favorites. The breading was so flavorful and the cheese was melted perfectly. The marinara sauce was a delicious addition and added a nice acidity to the dish.

Next up was the Crispy Mediterranean Chickpeas. We were unsure of how this would taste – chickpeas crisped up and served with citrus-garlic salt and rosemary? I must say that we were pleasantly surprised by the flavor in this little chickpea. It was wonderfully salty and such a fun little bite. This is the perfect bar snack to take the place of the traditional pretzels or peanuts you would normally see.

Almost every time I see Burrata on the menu, I must order it. The version at The Rust & Gold consists of Brooklyn Burrata, heirloom tomatoes, watermelon, cucumbers, pickled watermelon rind and candy stripe beets. This burrata was so light and creamy and the components made it the perfect summer dish. The candy stripe beets were one of my favorite ingredients and I could eat a plate of them alone!

Two of The Rust & Gold specialty dishes are the wings and the flat top burgers, so of course we had to try them both. We went with the classic buffalo sauce for the wings but there are 7 other flavor options as well. The wings had just the right amount of spice to give you that heat you are expecting from a buffalo wing.  The spiced blue cheese also helped in elevating the heat level on this dish, so be prepared with that nice refreshing beverage to wash it down.

There are 4 signature flat top burgers you can try and you can also create your own burger as well. We decided to order An Addy Summer which consisted of a double patty, Barton Bleu Cheese, charred pineapple and pickled red onions. The flavor in the burger was amazing but it was a little overcooked so therefore was a little bit dry.

The last dish of the evening was the Country Club. The Country Club is grilled chicken, French brie, green apple, lemony arugula, bacon and champagne honey mustard. I loved the flavor profile and how all the components worked together to create a sweet and salty dish. There was a wonderful balance in textures between the soft brie and the crunchy green apple. The bread was toasted perfectly and really brought the sandwich together.

The owners of The Rust & Gold have hit it out of the park with this restaurant. It is cool and laid-back but yet trendy at the same time. This is the perfect spot for a date, night out with friends or even an afternoon with the kids.
