Swallow Restaurant - Huntington, NY
There are certain restaurants that come to the forefront of my mind when people ask my favorite place to eat in Long Island. One restaurant I will always recommend is Swallow in Huntington. I love everything about this restaurant – trendy, inventive cocktails, and delicious dishes. Of course, one of my favorite things is that all the dishes are meant to be shared! Little bites of lots of food is absolute heaven for me!
Swallow originally opened its doors in October of 2010. It was a tiny hole in the wall and you were lucky if you were able to get a reservation for a table. My husband and I went one time with a group of 6 and then a couple of other times we sat at the bar. This restaurant was straight out of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We absolutely loved it! You could talk to the chef while he cooked and it was a very inviting place. A couple of years later, there was an opening next door and Swallow decided to expand. Swallow tripled the size it was before! The space that housed the tiny restaurant became the bar and the space next door became the main dining room.
At first my husband and I were disappointed with the renovation. Sure, it was easier to get a table and was a much trendier environment, but it lost the cozy appeal and home feeling the original space held. But as with most things, over time we grew used to the change and have come to love the new space as much as we loved the original restaurant.
I cannot count how many times I have eaten at Swallow. I have tried almost everything on the menu and pretty much love all the dishes. The menu at Swallow consists of all small plates and everything is meant to be shared. All of the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. This visit my husband and I went out with my sister-in-law and fiancé before going to see a show at the Paramount. They are pretty open about food, so we were able to order a number of great dishes to share.
We started our meal with the Butternut Squash Cappuccino. This is my favorite dish on the menu and I must have it every time I dine at Swallow! The Butternut Squash Cappuccino is topped with a truffle froth. When you dip your spoon into the Cappuccino, you grab a little of that truffle froth on top and it is the most heavenly combination you will ever experience. I have recommended it to my friends every time we eat at Swallow and I have never had someone dislike it!
Our second dish was the Beet Salad. The Beet Salad was served with goat cheese & kale mousse, apples, mesclun and a honey cider vinaigrette. This dish was nice and light and I loved the goat cheese & kale mousse. It was creamy and complimented the beets beautifully.
The next dish started the somewhat unhealthy portion of our meal. The Asparagus Fries are tempura battered asparagus served with lemon Dijon aioli. Hey, it was still asparagus – a little healthy? The tempura batter was not overpowering and added a nice crunchy coating to the asparagus. The lemon Dijon aioli was the star of this dish and balanced out the saltiness of the asparagus.
After the Asparagus Fries we had a little break in the meal to save some room for what was about to come. We finished up our meal with the Chicken Wings, Shrimp & Grits and French Onion Beef Sliders. The sauce on the chicken wings were sweet with a little bit of smokiness. They were extremely tender and juicy. Shrimp & Grits are another go to staple of mine at Swallow. I absolutely love the addition of the Andouille sausage to give this dish a nice amount of heat. Last but certainly not least were the sliders. The caramelized onions brought this dish to life and really hit it out of the park.
What I love about Swallow is that they could easily let the food quality slip and rely on the fact that they are conveniently located next to the Paramount, but they don’t. They rise to the occasion and create wonderful, unique dishes for their customers and create a fun, easy environment to try innovative cuisine.
