Verde Kitchen & Cocktails - Bayshore, NY

As parents of 2 young children, my husband and I try to go out every Saturday night. For 7 days and 6 nights we prioritize our children’s schedules but Saturday night is our adult time. We were looking for somewhere new and different to go, when we came across this upscale Mexican restaurant in Bay Shore.

Verde Kitchen & Cocktails is owned by brothers Anthony & Andrew Tartaglia. They created the menu at Verde based on their travels through Mexico. The menu consists of everything from street tacos and street corn, to whole roasted fish and Oaxacan style carne asado. At Verde, you can find something for everyone.

Verde is an environmentally friendly restaurant. The décor consists of reclaimed materials – used brick on one wall, other walls made from barn siding. Some of the tabletops were made from barn doors and others were made from tin roofs. The dining room in the back of the restaurant is the greenhouse. In the warmer months, you can find planter boxes containing peppers, peas and herbs displayed around the room.

The night we went to Verde we had plans with another couple. It was a snowy Saturday night and the table we were given was seated in the front of the restaurant by the bar. It was a nice cozy spot and not too loud. I had read some reviews that the bar area could get quite noisy but it did not bother us at all.

Our waiter was extremely attentive and we informed him that it was our first-time dining at Verde. He was helpful in telling us what the favorites were and helped us decide on our appetizers, as well as, entrees.

We started with a trio of guacamole. Any time I can share food and try multiple flavors I’m a happy lady! The flavors were traditional (onion, tomato, lime, avocado leaf), spicy charred broccoli (arbol chile, charred broccoli, Mexican oregano), and rajas (roasted poblano, pomegranate seeds, pepitas, almonds). It was fun to try a variety of guacamole as I’ve only ever tried traditional. The spicy charred broccoli was a little spicy for me. We all agreed that the traditional was our favorite, followed by the rajas and last the spicy charred broccoli. The traditional had the right amount of salt balance and we just kept going back for more. The guacamole is served with freshly made in-house tostadas.

The next appetizer we shared was the kale salad.  This salad is comprised of warm kale, braised oyster mushrooms, pepitas, Mexican oregano and a poached egg, dressed with a toasted garlic vinaigrette. I love cutting into a perfectly cooked poached egg and allowing the yolk to add the additional flavor to the ingredients it is accompanying. The vinaigrette was delicious and pulled all the ingredients together nicely to create a light second appetizer.

The last appetizer and my favorite was the queso fundido. Queso Fundido is housemade chorizo verde, Oaxaca cheese, salsa verde, and pepitas served with warm tortillas. This dish was basically just oozing cheese and more cheese. It was hot and had a little spice from the chorizo. If I could only order one dish at this restaurant, this would be the one!

We all decided to go our own ways for the entrees. I wanted the Mexico Street Tacos, so I of course ordered 2 different tacos to try a variety. I selected the fish and shrimp tacos. I really liked the shrimp taco but was not a fan of the fish. I felt it was a little too fried and I was mostly tasting the batter and not the actual fish.  The other entrees ordered at the table were the braised oxtail and the carne asada. We also ordered Mexican street corn for a side dish to share which was delicious and authentically flavored.
