Arata Sushi - Syosset, NY

It took 6 years of living in Long Island for me to discover this hidden gem! I thought I had tasted good sushi before, but once I stepped foot into Arata, I realized I hadn’t even begun to taste how good sushi can be!

Arata sushi chef-owner Jimmy Lian hails from the famous Nobu empire. When he decided to open Arata, he introducedunique dishes and amazing flavors to the people of Long Island.

The interior of Arata is dimly lit and cozy with a no-frills type of feel. When you go to Arata you are purely there for the food, not the ambiance!

Arata defines itself with its Omakase, or chef’s choice which comes in either 5 or 10 pieces. Arata's Omakase is like little sushi bites of heaven. Each piece is served with a perfect accompaniment to amplify the flavor profile - no soy sauce needed! The sushi is very delicate and each piece melts in your mouth with rich and wonderful flavor.

In addition to the amazing Omakase, Arata serves unique signature rolls and teriyaki entrees for those who do not eat sushi.  Arata also features rolls of the day so that you can try something different each time you visit. If this is your first time visiting, I recommend the Mango Invictus Roll and the Invincible Sandwich. These are two of their most popular signature rolls.

Since I’ve been to Arata multiple times, I decided to order the special rolls of the day. The two rolls were the spicy tuna kale roll and the autumn roll. The autumn roll consisted of shrimp, cucumber, pear and arugula topped with tuna and mango in a honey wasabi yuzu sauce.  The spicy tuna kale roll had a nice crunch with the kale and a good balance of flavor with the tuna. The autumn roll was nice and light and had a clean finish.

What’s amazing about Arata is that I’ve never seen anyone pair flavors like Chef Lian. It’s always an unexpected surprise to see what new rolls and flavor combinations he comes up with. Chef Lian knows exactly what ingredients to combine to compose the perfect combination of fish and flavor!
